The Klerksdorp/Tshepong Psychiatry Department is committed to providing comprehensive mental health services in the North West province. Our goal is to deliver high-quality, specialized care that is safe and accessible to the community. Under the Mental Health Care Act (2002), individuals requiring inpatient psychiatric care must first be admitted for evaluation and observation. Psychiatric services include dedicated psychiatric beds in specialized and regional hospitals, as well as brief admissions (up to 72 hours) for assessment and treatment at district hospitals. The Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital addresses the mental health needs of various districts in the North West.

Services

Tshepong Hospital serves as a 72-hour psychiatric observation unit, where patients undergo assessment before being transferred to designated facilities for ongoing care and rehabilitation. This evaluation process aims to determine the underlying causes of patients’ symptoms and involves assessments by a medical doctor, a psychiatric-trained registered nurse, and a psychiatrist. Patients experiencing substance intoxication often recover during this observation period, while those needing further involuntary treatment are transferred to Witrand Hospital for additional management.

Liaison Psychiatry

Our department provides liaison services, facilitating inter-departmental consultations to assist in the management of patients with psychiatric symptoms in other areas of the hospital.

Emergency Services

We offer 24-hour emergency consultations for psychiatric patients, who are assessed and treated at the casualty department as necessary

Academic Activities

The Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex serves as a training institution for medical interns, providing them with valuable exposure and support during their psychiatry rotations. Academic presentations, case reviews, and morbidity and mortality rounds are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays to enhance learning. Medical officers are encouraged to pursue diplomas in mental health and further education. GEMP IV Medical student rotations from Wits is starting in March 2025.

OUTPATIENT SERVICES

Tshepong Psychiatry Clinic:
Our clinic offers outpatient services for a wide range of mental health conditions, operating on Wednesdays and Fridays from 07:30 to 16:00. Referrals come from medical doctors and psychiatrists, and we typically see 120-180 patients weekly. During visits, we assess mental well-being and treatment side effects, referring patients for further investigation as needed. Medication can be collected from the hospital pharmacy.

OUTPATIENT SERVICES

Outpatient Psychology Program for Substance Use:
We provide specialized outpatient psychological services for individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Patients are encouraged to participate in therapy sessions and rehabilitation programs, facilitated by our social work department. This program is designed to support recovery and promote coping strategies.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Clinic:
Children and adolescents are seen on Tuesdays at the psychology department in Klerksdorp Hospital, with appointments made through medical professionals. Assessments are conducted by a multidisciplinary team, and medication is dispensed as required.
